September 1 - Deadline for Community College Scholarships for Future Teachers
Community college students studying to be teachers have until Monday, September 1 to apply for the prestigious North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Teacher Preparation Scholarships awarded annually by the North Carolina Community Colleges Foundation.
First awarded in 2006, the scholarships for prospective teachers are funded by a $2 million endowment supported by the North Carolina General Assembly, Bank of America and the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation. Scholarship recipients receive up to $5,000 in support per year.
For the 2008-2009 academic year, scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to a limited number of students enrolled full-time in the first or second year of a community college degree program that prepares students for transfer to a baccalaureate program in elementary or secondary education and are housed on a community college campus.
Interested students should contact the financial aid office of the North Carolina Community College in which they are enrolled for applications. Detailed information is available on the website of the North Carolina Community College System.
One of the most important factors in the selection of the recipients is the desire to teach in the classrooms of low-wealth areas of North Carolina. Each recipient must complete all credentials and begin work as a teacher in a public or charter school in a low-weath county in North Carolina within six years of receiving the first scholarship and agree to teach two full years for each year of scholarship grants
“We need great teachers in order to have great schools,” said Dr. R. Scott Ralls, president of North Carolina Community College System. “These scholarships help future teachers earn their credentials in their hometowns, and we hope they’ll stay in our state to help meet our growing educational needs.”

Congratulations to the Recipients!
NCCCFA is celebrating its tenth year of serving as part of the community college system team and serving as the only unified voice for faculty at the state level.
An old expression says, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”
A squeak can be an irritating noise, or it can be an indication that attention is needed to keep the wagon serving to meet the needs of the people.
NCCCFA has been the second kind of “squeak” by carefully coordinating faculty efforts to call Legislative attention to the needs of the system.
Those needs affect the faculty in a variety of ways.
Adequate funding for operations, equipment, facilities, and services for community colleges involved faculty needs.
Adequate salary levels to keep and/or replace faculty and professional staff in order to maintain the quality of education we offer is urgent.
The mission of
North Carolina Community College Faculty Association is
“to promote excellence throughout the
North Carolina Community College System.”
Your active involvement is needed NOW.
At the NCCCS Conference in Raleigh in October, NCCCFA will be electing four officers…half its state board…to serve for two years.
The association is seeking members to serve as President, Vice President of External Affairs, Vice President of Communications, and Western Regional Director.
If you have a candidate in mind, contact that person and offer to nominate him/her. If you would be willing to serve in one of the above capacities, consider nominating yourself.
Obviously, you will need to know what each office involves. A description of each officer’s duties is listed in the organization’s constitution. Currently, Bylaws changes are being proposed to more accurately reflect the current needs. The current Bylaws descriptions and the proposed changes are available at the NCCCFA website: www.ncccfa.org . Click on Call for Candidates 2008 in the Quick Links column on the left.
