History

The North Carolina Community College Faculty Association (NCCCFA) began at the NCCC Instructors Conference in Greensboro, NC, on Sunday, 11 October 1998. That evening, approximately 120 faculty members met and agreed to form a state-wide organization to address issues of importance to the 4,500 full-time faculty and thousands more part-time faculty of North Carolina's 59 community colleges.

During the next six months, with news of the organization generating a wave of enthusiasm among faculty, the fledgling organization had established a formal structure, articulated its mission and goals, and begun its work--amazing work--that during the next few months yielded amazing results: the largest overall funding increase for the North Carolina Community College System in the history of the state.

Six months later, celebrating its meteoric first year, the organization held its first NCCCFA Annual Meeting & Conference, 8-9 October 1999, at Guilford Technical Community College (Jamestown, NC). Members ratified the NCCCFA's slate of officers and constitution, attended professional-development workshops, raised over $2,000 in flood relief for NCCC faculty and staff whose homes and schools had been devastated only weeks before by Hurricane Floyd, and listened to keynote speaker H. Martin Lancaster, NCCCS President, announce,

You have made an impact on this budget, but more importantly, you have made an impact on the General Assembly, which I believe will continue to bear dividends in years to come.

... we will not rest, nor will you, until we have your salaries to the national average.

During its second year, the NCCCFA continues its amazing work.

With NCCCFA membership and state-wide involvement growing exponentially, its commitments and responsibilities are evolving likewise--and the organization needs you. If you are a full-time or part-time faculty member at a North Carolina community college, the NCCCFA is your organization. In the words of NCCCFA Conference '99 guest speaker Senator Walter H. Dalton,

... you expand the horizons of our citizens and you make light bulbs go off in the eyes of students both young and old. And by doing so, you make our state better, and by doing so, you make our world better.
